Odds and Ends

I have got that song - "short people got no reason to live" stuck in my head for some reason. And considering I am under 5 feet tall it gives me pause why it would be stuck in my head. The only reason I can think of is that the song is rather catchy. My old boss when I worked in the Emergency Department over summer years ago would sing that to me.

It has also been wondering through my head that I am going to start lying about my height. If I start telling people that I am 5 feet tall - would they be able to tell I am really not? Denis mom says she is 5 feet tall but we are the same height. And really - no one can tell how tall I am except other short people. Just like all tall people look the same height to me unless they are standing next to each other. True Story!

New obsession: learning to make a gif. I plan on making gifs of my cats and drawings and other random things to entertain myself with since stamp making has gone out the window. Maybe I can combine the two so I will be interested in making stamps again.

Also I tried that 52 letters for the year - and stopped after about my third one. Not sure if I am lazy or don't have the attention span for it.

We are getting our couch delivered on Tuesday!

Only ours is a sectional. Pretty excited to finally get rid of my old couch that I have had since 2004! It was in great condition too until Pumpkin and Juno came along and started using it as a scratching post. :/ We are trying to sell the old girl but no one is really interested.

And speaking of new - I really want to get out of this apartment. Our kitchen is just TOO small. SO SMALL! We have no room for anything. Gah!

I have also been redecorating like crazy - well - moving pictures and stuff around - getting rid of things. I guess I am just trying to make the best out of this place. I would love to own a home so I could PAINT! Ohhh how want to paint! I need COLOR in my life.

Washi Tape is probably the most versatile craft product around. It can decorate books, calendars, laundry pins, ornaments and pretty much anything you can stick tape on. Haha.

The first and only place I have ever purchased Washi Tape was at Cutetape.com which really does have tons of cute tape and great prices. I have around 20 rolls of Washi Tape purchased from CuteTape.com and probably will buy many many more.

I use the Washi Tape to mostly decorate letters and cards that I send out to friends and family. As well as decorate my journals.

Burt's Bees

I have a small obsession:

This is all the Burt's Bee's stuff I have gotten since NOVEMBER! I got one little lip gloss and I had to have EVERYTHING! LoL

Everything is great - the citrus face scrub works so well with the lemon poppy facial cleanser. It feels like you are putting cream on your face after giving it a good exfoliation.

The rose water toner is super refreshing - especially after taking off your make-up for the day.

The almond milk hand cream is a little too creamy for my hands - but is PERFECT for my feet. LOVE IT!

The res-q ointment is really nice when you have a headache - a little bit behind the ears and along your neck. Helps you relax a bit.

The lemon cuticle cream - well I haven't really seen a difference in my hang nails - but then again I am not that great at putting it on everyday.

The lip balms are awesome - the lip shimmers make your lips feel fresh because there is a bit of mint in them.

All the other stuff I have yet to try - since it is travel size and I am going to Europe in the Spring - I thought I would just take it with me.

All in all I think it is a pretty good product - plus it is made right here in North Carolina!

I love this quote from the Serena & Lily catalog. This quote truly reflects my passion for collecting stuff. When I was younger I would just collect random crap and then go through a phase of trashing it all. As I have gotten older I have learned to collect that which is useful and beautiful. My ability to curate is reflected in my journals of course and my slow and steady shift to make a beautiful home.

As you may or may not know there is this website called Pinterest that is a visual pin board of sorts where you can "pin" everything you love from different websites all into one place. Pinterest is a place where you can curate different boards with things that interest you. I adore Pinterest simply for the fact that the whole thing is visual. Not just random links with a description. It also strokes my ego that I have about 200+ followers.

My blog only has 6 followers. So you can see why I would take this opportunity to crow that 200+ people think I have very good taste. LoL!

Young House Love started a Pinterest Challange where you go into your Pinterest and make one thing that you have "pinned" up to make. I admit my crafts board is getting pretty full of stuff I have yet to make - lol. But I do use my hand carved stamps, paper craft, washi tape and Yumm-O the most.

Give Pinterest a try. I think you will be very pleased with the boards you can curate. Something to pull inspiration from as well as collect things that inspire you in once place and at a glance.

So I am not very proficient at journaling. The main reason is that I am lazy and feel that the details of my everyday life are not very interesting. As much as I am inspired to write down my life as others have done, making the most boring every day thing the most artistic and interesting -

I can't bring myself to like anything that I do. There is no beauty in what I create. At least I don't think so. (I feel kind of lame saying those last two sentences, but it is what it is) And Ira Glass may be correct in this:

But when I draw something or write my day out in a journal I just hate it. I hate my hand writing I hate my style of prose - I will even hate the color of my ink. Which in turn leads me to this hot mess:

which didn't really solve my displeasure with my journal. Ira says practice makes perfect but it just makes me want to stab myself in the eye when I see anything that I draw or write. I feel like I have no originality - not even enough to take what others have made and be inspired to make it my own.

There was even this one time I tried to write down my days in French so that the most mundane things looked beautiful and interesting while at the same time I could learn a little bit of French. Not sure what happened to that whole thing -think I forgot I was doing it until just now. LoL!

This blog is even a struggle to express my self and still like what I have put down. The one thing (two things I should say) that I have journaled or collected if you will, is a book of quotes and a book of packaging that I am pretty proud of. Well not proud - but I take pleasure in building them up and looking over them from time to time.

My book of quotes I have had for about 3 years and I write down anything that catches my fancy. Quotes from great novels like Anna Karenina all the way to quotes from the comic Dilbert.

It is just a great little book to capture things that make me smile, think, laugh, cry, etc. Since I have such a goldfish memory - it is nice to have something to capture these phrases and quotes. Although I still think my handwriting sucks.

True story - I actually spent a week trying to Google ways to improve your hand writing. Pretty sure I was using the wrong search phrases because I didn't find a whole lot to assist in improving my written word.

My other journal is a scrap book of packaging. Packaging from my kindle, vodka that Denis brought back from the Ukraine, the package that held a pack of 3 nail polishes - really anything that I find beautiful. When ever I go shopping or get something in the mail - I never open it right away because I just love the lovely package and newness of all of it.

These two journals I love and can curate - and as for my "art" / "scrap book" I will have to do as Ira says and keep working at it. Not to give up. "Never give up! Never surrender!" - Galaxy Quest

Not Enough Toothpaste

People say that variety is the spice of life. This phrase I mostly attributed to food. My eating habits being what they are (I eat like a 6 year old and mostly have the same thing over and over and over until I can't stand it anymore and move on to something else. Which I then eat over and over and over until I can't stand THAT anymore and it is just a vicious cycle) this phrase did not really apply to me.

The phrase does apply to my toothpaste. As you can see here, I have crazy amounts of tubes of toothpaste floating around my bathroom - and not because I am a crazy coupon lady - but because I enjoy brushing my teeth with something different everyday.

You can imagine my shock when this greeted me last night:

THREE TUBES OF TOOTHPASTE??!?! And two of them the exact same kind of toothpaste!?? Are you fucking kidding me?! Shit. Not cool.

I need to get to Target ASAP to replenish my toothpaste.

Just in case you were wondering - I did have some different kinds of floss. Cinnamon, mint, and some kind of clean burst stuff - but they don't make the cinnamon anymore - which actually was my favorite. Made me look forward to flossing strangely enough.

Oh and here is a funny story related to brushing my teeth - sometimes when I get hammed and go to bed with out brushing my teeth (i.e. blackout) my horrifically smelly mouth will actually wake me up from a dead sleep. It tastes horrible to the point I have to get up and brush my teeth in the middle of the night before I can go back to bed. Strange right?

I Love Yarn Balls

I don't know what it is about yarn balls - but I think they are like the most adorable thing in the whole world. Other than my cats of course. And kittens. And panda bears. And red pandas. Lets not forget little baby girls. And babies in animal costumes. And my nephew Logan.

Back to yarn balls - so this year I am going to make a yarn ball garland - of course the foam balls cost a crap load so I have to buy one package at a time with my 50% off coupon. Unless I can manage to drag Denis with me. Then I can get two at a time.

So I was looking at Pinterest for how to make the yarn garland and I saw all of these pictures and was like OMG - I love yarn balls. LOVE THEM.

As you can see - the little globe didn't make it. But it is still cute anyway. And let me tell you a funny story about that - so I opened the package and saw this little guy with some glue stuff around it and the little kitty had fallen off. And I was like - ohhh no! But with a little glue I could fix it back no problem. And then I was thinking about everything that I won and was like - wasn't there supposed to be like a snow globe or something? And then I shrugged and was like oh well. And then when I pulled out the shirt and all this glass was everywhere I was like - Ohhhhhh! That little guy WAS the snow globe. Boy did I feel silly.

Wanted to share all the useless crap I bought:

Been looking for gray velvet ribbon FOREVER and where do I find it? Anthropologie! And it comes with this adorable little wood spool. So cute!

Next is some bakers twine I got from Crate&Barrel. And get this - it was only $8! When divine twine is like $15 for 240 yards! And you get like 766 yards for $8! I almost lost my shit I was so shocked when I found this. Of course the divine twine as like 10 colors and this only comes in red. But whatever.

Next I got some super cute ornaments at Crate&Barrel too - but they cost a small arm and leg. Good thing I am under 5 feet. And the owl was from Target.

Frame

As for projects here is a little something I have been working on...

A few months back I found this lovely little picture and fell in love:

There was a frame that was just as ornate sitting in my garage and would look SMASHING painted in gray and white but I didn't have anything to frame. As I am not one of those people who just puts up frames on my wall without pictures. Too hipster for me. So the idea just sat waiting for the perfect picture to come along.

However it was not the perfect picture that came along but the perfect idea from Pinterest:

Found this picture a few weeks ago on a blog and I new that I NEEDED this for my jewelry. Especially my large necklaces. And add to the fact that I LOVE looking at my jewelry so what better way to display it than this. AND it would go perfect with the gray and white frame I have just been dying to make.

Off to Lowes I went to pick out the perfect shade of gray and white for my picture frame. I chose to paint this time rather than spray paint because I suck at spray painting.

It was gold before the paint job. LOVE IT!

We also had some board cut to size at Lowes

and then add some fabric

I added a cute little knob from Anthropologie to hold my necklace

I need to get a few more decorative knobs - just not sure where I can get them on the cheap around here.

Also not sure about the fabric choice. What do you think? Do I need something a little more subtle?

Anyway - I need to hang it up on the wall - but I need to finish the knobs up first so when that is done I will share a picture of my useful piece of art hanging up on the wall. Denis wanted to just lean it again the wall on top of the dresser - but he does not understand that the cats would just see my necklaces as toys to destroy. :(

Hand Carved Stamps

So I recently got into this hobby of carving my own stamps a few months ago. Above is all the stamps I have carved so far.

I first got interested when I spotted some really cute stamps on Pinterest that were for sale and decided to buy them. They were a little expensive but too adorable for words.

While I was waiting for my stamps to arrive I searched Pintrest for more stamps and came upon this web tutorial on how to make your own stamps:

Stamp Carving Tutorial

After looking through it I thought that it looked easy enough - so off I went to a craft store to buy my speed ball carving tool and rubber pad. It ended up being so easy that I ended up kicking myself for buying those stamps instead of just making copies. That is right - I have no original designs - just make copies of things. And to justify my stealing:

So fast forward to today and I have made over 25 stamps. I use them to make my own wrapping paper and cards. Plus it gives me something to do between drinking and watching tv.

My tools:

Xacto Knife to cut away excess rubber, bone knife to rub on image to rubber, pencil to trace image on the paper to rub onto the rubber and last but not least my speed ball carving tool to cut the images onto the rubber.

There are two types - white and pink of the speed ball rubber pads. The white is super easy to carve - almost too easy. As in so easy you can make cuts you didn't mean to. I think that is why I like the pink one better. But the pink rubber doesn't do so well with some ink stamps. It kind of beads up like water drops on the pad where the white one seems to be a better surface for it.

Carving a Design:

Do you see the little ticks or lines though some of the spirals. I have to do that with some designs so I know where to cut. I had to redo this stamp because I started carving out the wrong areas because I didn't mark where to cut. :/

I want to get a bigger stamp set of letters. That is one thing that is so not worth carving it myself.

My poor slippers. I loved them so. It was just like wearing socks around the house. Only I didn't have to put on news ones when I would come home.

Because I can never put on used socks - even if I just wore them for like 5 min. They get all stretched out and don't feel as good when you put them on again.

Ok - so remember how in this post Sun Shade I was all about the Sombrilla and thought it was the best thing ever? Well I pulled the trigger and bought one!

So we took it to the beach over the weekend:

But it was too windy to put up. :(

How windy?

Windy enough for someone to have a para sail and go para sail boarding on the ocean

That guy had to hold onto his umbrella to keep it from blowing away. It was amazing how he could read and hold on to his umbrella at the same time. Plus he had little vents at the top so it wouldn't flip the umbrella up.

Suffice it to say Denny Monster and I got burned. Even though we used sunblock - we just didn't apply it as often as we should have and had no shade.

We hope to go to the beach again soon when there isn't a thunderstorm blowing in (we left 5 min before it just started to pour rain).

P.S. - I also wrote to the maker of the Sombrilla and said they should totally make a YouTube video of how to put one up - because Denny Monster and I were having a bit of an issue figuring out how to set the thing up and the fact that the wind was blowing so hard didn't make it any easier.

Building A Cat Fort

So I had this shower bench from when I had surgery on my ankle that was just chillin in the shower stall so I thought it would be nice to put it in the bedroom so have a little place to sit down while getting dressed.

It ended up mostly being a place to throw clothes on. So it was like whatever.

And then one day Pumpkin came up with the idea of the cat fort. Kind of.

Pumpkin loves loves loves to hide behind blankets that are hanging off the bed or couch and attack the feet of anyone who walks by. As well as attack any cat that walks by. LOVES IT. In fact you could say that is her job in life is to wait patiently like a sniper and take down the rest of the household.

So I thought it would be cute to put a blanket over the bench ...

....so Pumpkin could have a permanent place to throw down and cause havoc. She of course took to it right away. So much in fact that we now call it the Pie Fort (Pumpkins nick name is Pie).

You can see her little paw sicking out after she took a swipe at my hand that happened to be messing with the blanket.

So it stayed this way for a while, with clothes still pilling on top of the bench and with all the clothes I noticed that the cats seemed to love sleeping on top of them. But they only liked sleeping on top of the bench when there was enough clothes on top to hide the fact that the top of the bench is just slats.

So I folded a really nice thick fleece blanket on top and wala! Instant love!

After that I was all like "I am a rock star" and that was that. But soon I noticed that when main blanket (The Sponge Bob blanket) would get pulled down so it was half on the floor half on the bench the kitties would sleep ON the blanket instead of the floor. So of course I had to put a blanket on the floor under the bench.

And here is Pumpkin already loving it:

And that is how you build a cat fort. Although really it is just how you arrange 3 blankets on and under a shower bench for the amusement of your cats because you are a crazy cat lady.

The flower looks great - the whale is ok and the plant looking thing I actually made from an eraser for my first try - it is really really hard to cut up an eraser. Much better to use stuff specified for making stamps

The inside pink poka dot was a bit much, but I couldn't find another color I liked. Maybe just white or green next time.

The corner didn't quite make it

It also said to use a zipper foot to sew in the zipper, I didn't want to go out and get one since I got impatient and wanted this finished today so I just didn't put the foot down. It was a bit of a disaster, but it got the job done.

So I saw this thumbtack tutorial and was like dude! I want to make this! So I did. And like all things I make it came out ok:

forgot to get the backless buttons so I had to pull all of them off

I didn't position the fabric right on these two and it started to come apart

I also kind of figured out how to get the picture I wanted on the button:

except it still came out like to the side and crap. Oh well. Also I ended up buying tack nail heads that you would used to ad a decorative feature on furniture - so it is a little too big for the buttons. I also picked up some magnets, but my buttons are too small for them so I have to get bigger ones.

So I thought I would try my hand at making one:

my stitches are not consistent and I can't seem to cut a straight line to save my life.

I also made potato soup

it came out ok. I think I added way too much milk and cream. It was just a touch too watery. And I blended it to long. I think next time I am just going to mash it in the pot and add half a cup of cream and half a cup of milk and go from there.

Next on the list to make is bacon mac and cheese. Very excited to try it.

Oh yeah and I also saw this tutorial on how to make a gift bag.

It came out ok, except for the corner. Plus the other ones I made were not the same size. Like I said I am not very consistent. To put a positive spin on that: each bag I made was unique in its own way. Haha.

So I was at Walmart (I know, I hate that place but we just happened to go in) and look at what I found:

I was like no way! A whole bolt of fabric for like $5.00. Sweet. I didn't really think I needed a whole bolt but it was all or nothing and I thought why not? It is only $5.00. And what should happen when we roll up on the register and they ring that shit up for $3.00! Totally no way! But the register was like WAY!

So I brought it home and made some cute little pinstripe flowers.

Super cute huh? And here is the fabric flower I made from the fabric I got from Japan.

I also thought it would be cute to make a flower out of this fabric:

But as you can see:

the fabric is not reversible - and it might just be a little too much trouble to glue two sides together and then make a flower. I am too lazy for that.

I also took a picture of my crappy glue gun that leaks all over the place.

And my pin backs that were totally worth $2.99 for 60 of them. So I can make all the flowers I want. Looks like every single person I know is getting a flower pin for Christmas/New Years this year. lolz

So I finally returned Cloverfield to Netflix.

Had it since November. Started to watch it on Denis' laptop since our DVD player bit the big one and we have yet to replace it. Never finished watching the damn thing. So Denis found it like 3 months later and we couldn't find the jacket envelope to send it back so we had to buy an envelope and send it through USPS. Which was like $5. Lame. Teach me not to lose that damn stuff. Next movie to get is Day After Tomorrow but still no DVD player. We really need one. Just like we need everything else. I wish the Wii could play DVD's but no such luck.

I made Barefoot Contessa's Coconut Cupcakes. They were fuckin ballin if I do say so myself. Enough butter to give you a heart attack but that is what makes them good. I was thinking about taking a picture while and after I made them - but I am too lazy.

And I hate blogs without pictures. Lame. I did buy a little hand mixer because whipping butter and sugar together by hand just fucking sucks. And we have yet to find a good deal on a Kitchenaid Stand Mixer. I also bought one of those little cupcake holders and that made it so much easier to carry it to work. Plus it was a muffin pan as well so it did double duty of bake and carry.

I also made Giada's Peanut butter and caramel pound cake. It was ok. Tasted like a peanut butter cookie in cake form. I was pretty stoked when I first saw her make it on tv, but it just wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. :/

Which I was totally stoked about because I love those pins and this one lady sells them on her website for like $17! And after I bought all the supplies it cost me like $15 to make my own. Also in other news I found my earrings that have been missing for several months as well. Turns out there was a hole in the fabric lining of my purse and they had fallen into the area between the fabric and pleather. The only reason I found it was because I was trying to find the little metal rivet that had falling into the purse before and what do I feel but an earring! Happy Day! Of course I am still missing my necklace that Denis got me for my birthday.

I have looked everywhere for it. When I found my earrings I kept feeling around in hopes that I would find the necklace in there as well, but no such luck. Sad Panda <------

Pretty cute right? I am doing mine in Navy Blue. I was on a roll until I got all freaked out about moss stitch and was trying to follow her directions and wasn't sure of how to do it because I thought the pattern was off a bit and then I was reading in a knitting magazine what moss stitch was and how to do it and I was like DUH! Sometimes I read too much into things and am just not the brightest crayon in the box. But now I am confident and hope to finish the sweater soon. Maybe find a cute long sleeve shirt to go with it.

So I see this little thing that maps out the states you have been so. So I am like cool. So I open the thing up and go to work, but as I start ticking off states that I have met I come to a question that tests my moral being: do I count the states I drove through/had plane connections through? Because when we went from Colorado to North Carolina there were quite a few states that we drove through but we didn't really stop and see anything (we had two cats with us and that isn't really conducive to seeing the sites) and when I fly back to Colorado from North Carolina there is usually a connection in another state and maybe a layover. Although some of my layovers were just pit stops to pick people up and we never even got off the plane, like the time we made a stop in Tennessee and all I saw of the state was the tarmac and the outside of the airport. So does that count as having been to that state?If so, here is the map filled in if I count the road trip / plane stops:

And speaking of TV - whenever I watch the Little Couple the music they play is just like in the Sims. I wonder if they are trying to draw a parallel. Mini people, everyday lives, building a house, trying to have a baby, etc. If that isn't a Sims game I don't know what is.

Look at this sweet new set of dishes I got:

I am in LOVE with my dishes! The dishes were a gift from Denis for getting a job. Originally I had just got the mugs from Anthropologie with a gift card for my hot milk drinks. Then I decided I wanted the whole set and was off to buy it, but Denis said he would get it for me if I got the job..... and so I got the job and we went to Anthropologie the next day only to discover that the dishes had gone on sale (yay!) but only 4 bowls were left (Oh no!) so we filled out a form and the Anthro staff found other stores that had the dishes and they were sent to us! Yay!

Although before that I had called a million stores trying to find the dishes only to have the stores the staff had contacted send me the dishes anyway. What a waste of 2 hours!

So I have

4 bowls

6 plates

2 mugs

I am waiting on the other 2 mugs. I hope they get here soon! I am sad without them.

Of course I refuse to let Denis touch or use the dishes. Which is bad because you are supposed to enjoy your nice things. Because no occasion is ever special enough - everyday should be special. But whatever.

I also finished my sweater!

But I made the sleeves too short. I don't feel like pulling it apart like I already had to do once with the left sleeve because there were about a billion holes around the underarm because I didn't know how to pick up stitches correctly. Besides it is too freaking hot here anyway to wear and probably will not cool down until November - maybe - although more like December. So I have plenty of time to fix it.

So over this style too?!?! WHAT?!! Why why why does this happen to me. I was all stoked about how when I eventually got a house in like 5 years I was going to put this light fixture in EVERY ROOM of my house and now I come to find out they are like SO OVER! I feel horrible. HORRIBLE! My whole world has fallen apart. My dream of Tommy Smythe from Sarah's house coming over and admiring my design skills is OVER! He would see the capiz shell chandelier and be like "OMG! Those belong on a beach not on a ceiling." Just like how he hates boob lights. "Boobs belong on babes not ceilings."

Just like that whole Keep Calm Carry On Poster

I thought I was all hip and was going to be the only one with this poster and all of my friends would be super impressed, only to have this show up at TARGET! TARGET! Target lets me know that a trend is so main stream that you are nothing but a poser for having it. And it is cheapified and horrible. It is just a dirty dirty whore now. Just like with Hello Kitty. So unique and fun and only at Sanrio and the Asian Stores and then it shows up at Target and the quality is gone. The magic! The cuteness! ALL GONE! I had to get rid of all my hello kitty stuff because it sickened me to look at her anymore. That CHEAP WHORE! And now the poster is over. Old news.

Yet, I still want them. I want them in my home. I am a HACK!

I will be like one of those low quality design shows on HGTV where you can just tell everything is just cheap and there really is no beauty or originality to it. I feel dirty just looking at those homes. Just like model homes. No personality. My home is going to end up like that. No personality. Just a design on a dime that ends up looking horrible with cheesy gold bean bags and a zebra rug. And I HATE GOLD AND ANIMAL PRINTS!

I am off to cry now. And drink away my sorrow.

I am starting the couch to 5K thing and upon completion of the program I would like to run a 5K. So I am looking for runs and I find this:

For competitive runners, the Runway 5K provides a smooth and flat surface. The first half of the race/walk course will run alongside two of the Airport’s runways and will provide exciting views of planes landing and taking off, the terminal complex and a scenic view of the uptown Charlotte Skyline. The course is wheelchair accessible and baby stroller friendly. Given the secure location of this Run and for safety reasons, bikes, rollerblades, inline skates, dogs and/or other pets are not allowed. The course will NOT be opened prior to the 8.am. scheduled Runway 5K Run.

It is sad that Paul the squid is going to retire. He has picked the winner of the world cup like 8 times. I might try that with my cats. Put the two final team flags on the floor and see which one they go for first. Although I will probably have to pick one cat to pick. But which one?!?!

I love love love love this movie. I have already watched it like 3 times. It is one of those movies that isn't too stressful for me to watch. I hate those super stressful or embarrassing moments in movies. I am too empathetic for my own good and can't stand to watch when something embarrassing happens. That is probably why I don't like comedies very much.

For example:

In Pride and Prejudice - I have to fast forward through the part of the ball when Kitty, Lydia and Mary all make fools of themselves and it is just too horrifying to watch.

Even during TV shows I will actually pause the show and get myself ready for what is about to happen. I have to brace myself.

The only other movie I can watch again and again without any stress is Constantine.

I love that movie.
